The impact of consortia purchasing of periodical publications on the document supply service

    Get PDF
Purpose – This paper aims to show the impact of consortia purchased periodical publications on document supply services. These services have undergone considerable changes over the last five years, first decreasing but now recovering. Design/methodology/approach – First, this paper reviews the most recent specialised literature, focusing mainly on the impact of electronic journals in libraries, their effects, and proposed actions. Second, as an example of this new behaviour, presents the document supply service data, as collected in one hospital’s health-science library in the last four years. Findings – As evidenced by the literature, the users’ acceptance of electronic journals has undoubtedly been excellent. Consortia purchasing projects have become a basic tool that expand collections, support cooperative technological development, and require negotiating skills from librarians. But these mass purchases do not seem to be the ideal solution for libraries, they entail losing freedom when choosing the collection and often make library collections homogeneous by publisher. Originality/value – Reflects on what possible causes have led to the current situation and the current way to manage the collection.Publicad

The Sedic Health Science Group organized the 1st Technical workshop on health science libraries in the 21st century: electronic, virtual, digital and hybrid. The aim was to update the view of health science libraries within the technological environment, sharing professional experience, methodologies and practices. In the first session, 12 autonomous communities (a designation for geopolitical regions within Spain) reported on their virtual library projects, which are in different phases of development. The second session addressed new concepts in acquisitions, such as national licensing of electronic resources and “pay per view”; new approaches to accessibility, including open access repositories and open access digital books; and new tools for integrating catalogue listings of library resources with metasearch, webbridge, and individualised data bases

The Móstoles University Hospital Library in Madrid, Spain, conducts a yearly survey to determine user satisfaction with its support for caring, teaching and research endeavors. In 2020 the yearly questionnaire also contained items on the new services introduced by the library to help users deal with the effects of the health crisis faced by the hospital. The results revealed that the library continued to be among staff"s most highly esteemed providers of high quality information. Librarians have been key players in a time of uncertainty, enabling healthcare professionals to find the information needed during a scenario in which decisions could not be adopted lightly. This study was funded by the Comunidad de Madrid, under the Excellence Project 202000350/001

Integrating the hospital library with patient care, teaching and research: model and Web 2.0 tools to create a social and collaborative community of clinical research in a hospital setting

Background: Research in hospital settings faces several difficulties. Information technologies and certain Web 2.0 tools may provide new models to tackle these problems, allowing for a collaborative approach and bridging the gap between clinical practice, teaching and research. Objectives: We aim to gather a community of researchers involved in the development of a network of learning and investigation resources in a hospital setting. Methods: A multi-disciplinary work group analysed the needs of the research community. We studied the opportunities provided by Web 2.0 tools and finally we defined the spaces that would be developed, describing their elements, members and different access levels. Model description: WIKINVESTIGACION is a collaborative web space with the aim of integrating the management of all the hospital’s teaching and research resources. It is composed of five spaces, with different access privileges. The spaces are: Research Group Space ‘wiki for each individual research group’, Learning Resources Centre devoted to the Library, News Space, Forum and Repositories. Conclusions: The Internet, and most notably the Web 2.0 movement, is introducing some overwhelming changes in our society. Research and teaching in the hospital setting will join this current and take advantage of these tools to socialise and improve knowledge management

A SWOT analysis on 54 health sciences libraries -related libraries from Community autonomous of Madrid (Community of Madrid) was presented at BiblioMadSalud 2016. Results revealed some internal weaknesses: lack of coordination, communication and institutional involvement with libraries, and lack of insight on them. In order to find solutions, BiblioEstructura was proposed as a work-group to develop a structure, organization and performance of health libraries to be acknowledged by Community of Madrid administration. Its main objective was to gain insight on health libraries at hospital settings. The first line of work was to review current documentation on hospital structure, organization and performance; the second line was to conduct a survey on libraries from national health system hospitals. Current regulatory documentation on internal organization of national-wide and Community of Madrid hospitals was revised. We were assessed by expert, hospital managers. Surveys were performed with phone interview on 25 health libraries, through 12 open-ended questions that answered anonymously. Legislative documentation, i.e., Royal Decree 521/1987 and Regional Law 11/2017 do not mention health libraries. Responses from phone interviews showed great heterogeneity in management of libraries. Some self-named terms was general-purpose library, medical library, health library or professional library. Also, libraries can belong to Management Board of the Health Service or share their affiliations. Although 44% of hospital have a Library Committee, sometimes they have unified commissions. Library staffs are sometimes members of other hospital committees. 72% of libraries deliver certified training and offer lectures. Research foundation is present in 19 hospitals, but just 10 are connected with it, 4 have it in their web page, and one of them mentions it in its annual report. Our current research shows how diversity of terms and affiliations, and lack of involvement in management boards allow the poor acknowledgement of health libraries within the hospitals. These circumstances call for the need for regulation that fix those drawbacks. The opportunity to build a single entity for all CAM health libraries and work-groups is the key to work in common lines that enable the achievement of a common goal

BiblioEstructura of BiblioMadSalud was proposed as a work-group to develop a structure, organization and performance of health libraries to be acknowledged by Community of Madrid administration. Start of your work with an internal analysis which result was presented at BiblioSalud 2019, XVI Jornada Nacional de Información y Documentación en Ciencias de la Salud with the title “Institutional status of health science libraries in the public hospitals of the community of Madrid”. In this work we propose to carry out an external analysis with the objective of knowing the legal structure in which the Health Sciences Libraries are framed within the institutions at the national level. Methods: A telephone survey is made to the coordinators of the Virtual Libraries of the 17 Autonomous Communities of Spain. with 4 questions, 2 basic and other two conditioned to the previous answers. Result: This study shows that only three Autonomous Communities have organized and regulated a system that establishes the mode of operation, structure and organization of their Health Sciences Libraries of their Public Hospitals. In the rest of the Communities, in the best of cases, there is a Virtual Library that acts as a working link between the rest of the libraries in your Community and coordinates some functions and services. Conclusions: It is essential to carry out a consensus work in which a legal document is formalized, supervised and approved by the Autonomous Administration, which defines the organization, structure and functioning of the Health Sciences Libraries in Public Hospitals, which It would provide stability to the system and a reference to the workers of the system
